TODAY Zimbabwe commemorates 37 years since the signing of the Unity Accord on 22 December 1987, a pivotal moment in the country’s history. It is a moment for reflection and celebration, particularly for those of us in the diaspora.
This landmark agreement between the two major political parties, Zanu (Zimbabwe African National Union) and PF-Zapu (Patriotic Front Zimbabwe African People’s Union), marked the end of ethnic tensions that had plagued the nation during the early years of independence. It laid the foundation for a new era of national peace, unity, and development; a bold step toward healing the wounds of a divided nation and sowing the seeds for a more inclusive Zimbabwe.
For Zimbabweans living in the diaspora, the Unity Accord is more than just a historical event; it symbolises the potential for unity, peace, and national development — values that continue to resonate as a guiding light for the potential of Zimbabwe to rise above its challenges and chart a course towards its ambitious Vision 2030.
This article reflects on the importance of the Unity Accord, the role of unity in the country’s development, and how the diaspora community can contribute to shaping Zimbabwe’s future.
The Unity Accord of 1987: A Journey from Division to Reconciliation
The Unity Accord came after a period of conflict following Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. The disturbances resulted in a series of negotiations between the two largest political forces in post-independent Zimbabwe: Zanu, led by the now late former President, Cde Robert Mugabe, and PF-Zapu, led by the now late Vice-President, Dr Joshua Nkomo.
Despite the shared goal of liberating Zimbabwe from colonial rule, the years that followed saw tensions between the two parties, particularly during the 1980s when the country was still finding its footing in a new political landscape. The division between Zanu and PF-Zapu reached a climax with the Gukurahundi disturbances, where scores lost their lives.
This period left deep scars in the hearts of many Zimbabweans, particularly those from the Matabeleland and Midlands regions.
However, in December 1987, Zimbabwe’s leadership took a bold step and remarkable commitment toward peace and reconciliation. Cde Mugabe and Dr Nkomo, the two founding fathers of Zimbabwe, recognised that peace was the only way forward for the country. For them, there was a need for an agreement which was not just a political merger but a symbol of national healing and reconciliation.
The Unity Accord was signed on 22 December 1987, merging the two parties into a single political entity, Zanu-PF, and committing to a unified peaceful Zimbabwe. This landmark agreement not only ended the immediate tensions but also set in motion the process of healing and national integration. For many Zimbabweans, the Unity Accord represents a powerful example of how political rivals can set aside differences and work together for the greater good of the nation.
The Unity Accord helped lay the groundwork for the political and social stability that would allow Zimbabwe to pursue key developmental projects in subsequent years. But more importantly, it was a lesson in the power of reconciliation, which resonates deeply with Zimbabweans, especially those of us living abroad, who continue to seek a better and more unified future for the country.
The Importance of Sustaining Unity for Future Generations
The importance of sustaining this unity for posterity cannot be underestimated. From a diaspora perspective, the importance of the Unity Accord lies not just in the cessation of violence, but in the potential for long-term national development. Zimbabwe’s post-independence economic challenges have been well-documented. The country has faced severe economic decline in recent decades, marked by hyperinflation, unemployment, loss of investor confidence and international isolation.
However, the message of unity embedded in the Unity Accord remains crucial for any future economic recovery and social development. This unity established in 1987 remains critical to the country’s future.
Fundamentally, unity is the bedrock upon which sustainable development can be built. A united Zimbabwe is better positioned to attract foreign investment, foster political stability and ensure social harmony, all of which are essential for the country’s development.
This importance of unity cannot be overstated, especially as Zimbabwe works towards achieving its Vision 2030, which aims to transform Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy by the year 2030.
Achieving this goal requires collective effort across all sectors of society—Government, business, civil society and the diaspora, alike.
For the diaspora community, this vision represents both an opportunity and a responsibility. Zimbabweans abroad contribute significantly to the country’s economy through sending remittances, offering expertise and investing in local businesses. However, for Vision 2030 to succeed, unity is necessary both at home and abroad, ensuring that all Zimbabweans work together towards common objectives.
Furthermore, unity fosters collaboration. It is through collaboration that sustainable development occurs. The strength of a united Zimbabwe lies in its ability to bring together diverse talents, resources and ideas to tackle pressing issues such as poverty, unemployment, healthcare, education and infrastructure development. In a world where global challenges are increasingly interconnected, Zimbabwe’s unity can serve as a beacon of hope for building resilience in the face of adversity.
The potential for a unified and peaceful nation is an essential source of hope for Zimbabweans in the diaspora. It creates a sense of stability and peace and provides a framework within which contributions can have greater impact. A peaceful and united Zimbabwe attracts both local and foreign investments, which is key to addressing the country’s economic struggles as the country pursues Vision 2030.
The younger generation of Zimbabweans, both at home and abroad, must be taught the importance of unity, not just as a historical event, but as a living, evolving process. National unity is essential for the stability of the country and for the realisation of Vision 2030. Divisions, whether political, ethnic, or social, are counter-productive to progress. As Zimbabweans in the diaspora, it is our duty to shun these divisions and support initiatives that promote national unity, share knowledge and resources and advocate for policies that advance inclusive growth and development.
It is in this regard that the Unity Accord remains an enduring legacy of Zimbabwe’s commitment to peace. Today, it is more important than ever for all Zimbabweans to continue the work of healing, reconciliation and nation-building in order to leap-frog the development of the country through the philosophy“leaving no one and no place behind”.
By embracing the spirit of unity, Zimbabwe can navigate its challenges and build a prosperous future for generations to come.
For the diaspora, this 37th anniversary is an opportunity to remind ourselves that the unity we seek for Zimbabwe is not just a matter of political co-operation—it is about fostering a culture of reconciliation, tolerance and inclusivity in all aspects of society.
Vision 2030: A Unified Path Towards Prosperity
Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 is a roadmap for economic and social transformation. The Government’s strategic focus on infrastructure development, industrialisation and human capital development seeks to elevate the country’s living standards and create jobs for millions. However, for Vision 2030 to be realised, the core principle of unity established by the Unity Accord must be embraced, ably supported by the philosophy, nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo.
At the heart of Vision 2030 is the idea that economic prosperity must be inclusive. A united Zimbabwe can better ensure that the fruits of independence and development are shared equitably among all citizens, regardless of their background. Whether in agriculture, industry, or technology, a united nation will foster innovation, increase productivity and improve access to essential services. Moreover, by prioritising education and health, Vision 2030 aims to create a well-equipped, healthy workforce that will drive the country’s growth.
Zimbabwe’s diaspora plays a vital role in this vision. According to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, remittances from the diaspora account for billions of dollars annually, making up a significant portion of the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
Additionally, diaspora professionals are contributing their expertise to sectors such as healthcare, education and technology, helping to build capacity in Zimbabwe’s human capital. As Zimbabwe continues to build upon the Unity Accord’s foundation, the diaspora’s role in fostering national development cannot be underestimated and must be appreciated.
Understandably, the diaspora’s involvement in Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 goes beyond financial contributions. They serve as ambassadors for the country, advocating for Zimbabwe’s interests on the global stage, establishing trade relationships and promoting Zimbabwe’s tourism and cultural heritage. In this way, they help enhance Zimbabwe’s global profile and attract the partnerships needed for the country’s growth.
Lessons Learned from the Unity Accord
As Zimbabweans, both at home and abroad, reflect on the past 37 years, it is essential to appreciate the lessons learned from the Unity Accord. First and foremost, the power of dialogue and reconciliation cannot be overstated. Zimbabweans have experienced first-hand how division can be exploited for political gain, leading to conflict and instability. The Unity Accord is a reminder that the path to peace and prosperity requires a commitment to dialogue, compromise and most importantly, forgiveness.
The Unity Accord also underscores the importance of inclusivity. It was not simply a political deal between two parties but a pledge to build a nation that respects diversity—whether political, ethnic, or cultural. The diaspora community, which is spread across the world, represents this diversity and carries with it a wealth of experiences and expertise that can be vital in the process of nation-building. A united Zimbabwe is one that embraces all its people, no matter where they live or what their background may be.
Maintaining unity is vital in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society like Zimbabwe. The Unity Accord was an important step in healing the wounds of a fractured nation. It provided a framework for fostering social cohesion, emphasising national rather than ethnic or party affiliations. Through the agreement, Zimbabweans of all ethnic backgrounds, identify with a shared national identity and collective purpose.
Finally, the Unity Accord provides a blueprint for future generations to follow. Zimbabwe’s history, marked by liberation struggles and littered with internal conflicts and economic hardships, can serve as a powerful reminder that unity is not always easy, but it is essential.
The Unity Accord taught Zimbabweans that when the country faces challenges, its strength lies in the ability to come together to seek solutions. The collective wisdom and collaboration of the founding fathers of Zimbabwe, Cde Mugabe and Dr Nkomo and their leadership collective should be applauded for realising that we have one Zimbabwe, which we call home.
As Zimbabwe celebrates 37 years of unity, it is a time for both reflection and celebration. It is time to recommit ourselves to the Unity Accord, which stands as a testament to the power of reconciliation, dialogue and co-operation in overcoming division.
For those of us in the diaspora, the significance of the Unity Accord resonates deeply, as we continue to contribute to Zimbabwe’s growth while advocating for peace, unity and inclusive development. It is an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made, the lessons learned and the progress achieved in the pursuit of peace and unity. It is an opportunity to reflect on the role that we as individuals or a collective are playing in nurturing lasting unity and peace in Zimbabwe.
Looking ahead, the Unity Accord remains our symbol of hope for a prosperous future—a future where Zimbabwe stands united and strong, ready to overcome its challenges and reach its full potential. As Zimbabwe continues its journey towards prosperity, let us also reaffirm our commitment to the continued journey of building a united, peaceful and prosperous Zimbabwe.
