Mini solar grids for social amenities

The Government has launched mini solar grids to supply power to essential services such as schools, clinics, and business centres, in a bid to address power shortages.

These grids will operate independently of the national grid, ensuring a consistent power supply and reducing disruptions caused by outages from ZESA.

During a recent Government media session, Engineer Gloria Magombo, Permanent Secretary for Energy and Power Development, announced the initiative, stating that each province now has a solar grid in operation.

“These solar grids are not affected by national grid loadshedding; they continue to be supplied as they will be independent,” she explained.

Perm Sec Magombo highlighted the ministry’s efforts to develop a national integrated resource plan and energy resource plan, aimed at consolidating the network master plan through 2040.

This comprehensive approach will align with the rural energy master plan and the solar integration plan, set to be launched in the first quarter of next year.

The ministry is also collaborating with the World Bank on a national electrification strategy to identify and close access gaps in energy supply. Currently, 62 percent of the population has access to modern energy, leaving 38 percent without.
