A man from Bulawayo’s Pumula North suburb tragically lost his life after being stabbed multiple times with a broken beer bottle.
The incident occurred at Shelbastic shops in the presence of other patrons.
This came to light when Eric Ngonidzashe Jena, appeared before Bulawayo High Court Judge Naison Chivayo, facing a murder charge.
He was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in jail.
The court heard that on the day of the incident, Jena, who was intoxicated, encountered Wilfred Maderera at Shelbastic Shops and began hurling insults at him.
Jena expressed his hatred for men from Ndola, claiming they had hurt him.
Sensing danger, Wilfred attempted to flee, but Jena smashed a beer bottle and pursued him.
He caught up with Wilfred and stabbed him twice, once in the neck and once in the shoulder.
Wilfred fell to the ground and cried out for help.
An ambulance was called to the scene, but Wilfred had already passed away upon its arrival.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to Jena’s arrest.
A witness, Rossane Muzenda, testified that Jena arrived at the bottle store and started causing trouble.
“He shouted his hatred for men from Ndola and then smashed a beer bottle. Jena chased after two men who escaped, then pursued Wilfred and stabbed him with the broken bottle,” she said.
