Two police officers from Sakubva Police Station in Mutare have appeared in court following allegations of assaulting investigators from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC).
Sergeant Mduduzi Makina (39) and Constable Elliot Gava (42) are accused of physically confronting ZACC officers who were in the process of arresting a fellow officer for bribery. The incident occurred on December 11 at a roadblock along the Mutare-Masvingo Road, near Mutare Teachers’ College, where the two officers were conducting traffic duties.
The ZACC team had received complaints about corrupt activities at the roadblock and observed police officers soliciting and accepting bribes from motorists during their surveillance.
They arrested Constable Peace Muchenje for bribery and attempted to seize a roadblock declaration book as evidence.
It is alleged that after the arrest, Makina and Gava confronted the ZACC officers, demanding the return of the declaration book. The situation escalated when they reportedly pulled an investigator from the driver’s seat, removed the car keys, twisted his arm, and fled the scene with the declaration book. They were remanded on bail of US$100 each.
