Makoto for World Chess Champs

THE Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) has announced that International Master (IM) Rodwell Makoto will represent the country at the 2024 FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024 in New York City, USA, from December 26-31.

Makoto’s recent contributions at the 45th Chess Olympiad helped secure a silver medal for Zimbabwe.
This historic event marks the first time the championships will be held in North America.
This is not Makoto’s first encounter with elite competition. He is no newcomer to facing the world’s best, having represented Zimbabwe at two FIDE World Cup tournaments in Baku, Azerbaijan, last year and Sochi, Russia, in 2021.

ZCF communication and public relations director, Agab Dozva, was optimistic that Makoto will be competitive. He said Makoto’s participation at the tournament will inspire other players in Zimbabwe.
“I am looking forward to IM Rodwell Makoto’s positive performance against the world’s best, considering the blazing form he displayed recently at the 45th World Chess Olympiad. His participation will serve as a great inspiration for the youngsters back home,” said Dozva.

December 29 will feature a free day dedicated to Chess Davos, an exclusive conference exploring the intersection of chess and finance, further enriching the event’s allure.
“This is a unique opportunity for chess to shine in such a prestigious setting. We are proud to support Rodwell as he competes with the best in the world, showcasing the talent and potential of Zimbabwean chess on an international stage,” said ZCF president, Todd Mapingire.

The event will kick off with the Rapid Championship from December 26-28. The Blitz Championship will resume on December 30 and 31. With this new schedule, players and fans alike can anticipate an unforgettable chess experience.
ZCF has encouraged all chess enthusiasts to follow Makoto’s journey and support his efforts as he competes at this prestigious championship. – @brandon_malvin
