Businesses urged to explore innovative solutions

BULAWAYO mayor Councillor David Coltart has urged businesses to explore innovative solutions to balance operations amid water and power shortages.

The city is grappling with a severe water supply crisis due to continuous disruptions in power supply at key pumping stations.

The country’s energy sector has also been hampered by climate change, which has reduced output at the Kariba Hydro-power station due to low water levels.

In a speech read on his behalf by Councillor Dumisani Nkomo at the 16th Southern Region Mega Fest business awards ceremony on Friday, the mayor highlighted that businesses must navigate operational complexities in today’s economy.

“I encourage you to explore innovative solutions that enable you to balance your operations, which involves adapting technologies, diversifying products or service offerings, and developing strategic partnerships with other businesses,” he said.

He noted that the recent power and water shortages have significantly impacted businesses, particularly those in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors.
Power outages have forced some manufacturers who do not have alternative sources of power to operate for less than six hours per day.

“Lack of reliable infrastructure has resulted in reduced productivity, increased costs, and a decline in competitiveness. This calls once again for us to be collectively innovative and ensure that businesses make innovation part of their DNA,” he said.

Despite these challenges, the business community has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability. ZimStats reports that the manufacturing index for the fourth quarter of 2023 registered a 12,26 percent year-on-year increase.

The mayor stated that businesses that have diversified their operations, explored new markets, and invested in innovative technologies are key to the growth of this region.

He further emphasised the importance of compliance in ensuring the continued growth of Bulawayo.
“The payment of rates and taxes enables us as a city to provide vital services and infrastructure, thus supporting people’s growth and job creation. It is key to ensuring that we also provide the necessary services to the city.

“I urge all businesses to prioritise these payments and, if necessary, make payment plans as well and work with us to build a prosperous and sustainable future for our city,” Clr Coltart said

He reiterated that the city is committed to fostering a business-friendly environment that encourages growth, innovation, and job creation.

“We recognise the vital role that businesses play in our economy, and we are working to provide the necessary support and infrastructure for your success,” he said.
