WE urge parents and guardians to take an active interest in their children’s whereabouts, especially during this December holiday, to ensure that they do not fall into behaviours that may harm them or affect their futures.
Over the past few days, there has been a significant increase in the number of minors frequenting bars and nightspots in Bulawayo. These children are exposed to drinking, smoking, and other dangerous activities that could have adverse long-term effects on their lives. We urge parents to take a closer look at their children’s movements during the holidays and ensure that they are not participating in activities that may harm them.
Some bars and nightspots in Bulawayo can be dangerous places for minors as age restrictions are not strictly enforced. Children should not be allowed to enter these places or consume alcohol or other substances that may harm their physical and mental well-being. The role of parents and guardians in ensuring that their children are not participating in these activities cannot be overstated. It is their responsibility to monitor their children’s whereabouts and protect them from harm’s way.
Parents and guardians should be aware that while the police have done a good job in controlling Vuzu parties that are notorious for drugs, alcohol and substance abuse as well as casual sex during school holidays, the children have now shifted to bars and nightspots where they are even more at risk.
We understand that these holidays can be a time of relaxation and leisure for children, but parents and guardians should also remember that their children are their responsibility. It is important to remember that neglecting this responsibility could lead to disastrous consequences. Parents should take the time to educate their children on the dangers of such activities and work towards finding alternatives that are safe and entertaining. This can be achieved through planning family outings, taking trips, or getting involved in community events that are child-friendly.
Furthermore, parents should engage with the authorities to ensure that age restrictions are enforced in places where minors are not allowed. The police should also be vigilant in monitoring such places and ensuring that children are not allowed to participate in or enter such venues. The Bulawayo City Council should also be doing more to create safe spaces for children and young people to enjoy themselves during the holidays, away from the dangers of alcohol and other substances.
We call on parents to engage with the authorities, educate their children on the dangers of such activities, and find safe alternatives during this holiday season. We believe that we can create a safer environment for our children if we all take responsibility and act.
