HOW can one overcome challenges and build a successful business? Hildah Macheya, a 34-year-old entrepreneur, provides the answer. Her mobile catering company, Bliss Events and Cosmetics, is a testament to her resilience and entrepreneurial spirit.
For six long years, she faced significant challenges as a struggling vendor, grappling with the difficulties of securing stable employment due to her lack of formal qualifications. As a single mother of four, the burden of responsibility weighed heavily on her shoulders. However, it was her unwavering passion for cooking and serving others that ignited a fire within her to create a better future for herself and her children.
What began as a passion project has blossomed into a thriving business that not only serves delectable cuisine but also uplifts single mothers in the local area, creating a supportive community where they can find hope and inspiration amid their struggles.
Hildah, born and bred in one of Bulawayo’s oldest suburbs, Entumbane, is the brainchild behind Bliss Events and Cosmetics. Launched in 2022, the company specialises in providing catering services for various events, from birthday parties to corporate gatherings. They offer traditional, elegant cuisines which clients can choose from, as well as a wide range of beverages.
“Our operations are quite simple but legitimate. When a client comes to inquire, we give them information on what they need, then allow them to explain and express their ideas. We help with the assembling and event planning from the start to the final day. We also offer discounts and promotions on bookings, and we value transparency and honesty whenever we have an event. We have meetings with our clients for planning purposes and to get to know each other better as we are still trying to be known in the marketplace,” said Hildah
However, Hildah’s unique approach sets her apart from the competition. With a commitment to supporting single mothers, she actively employs and trains women in her community, providing them with job opportunities and essential skills in the catering and events industry.
“I wanted to create a business that not only fulfils my passion for cooking but also makes a difference in the lives of others. I understand the challenges that single mothers face, and I wanted to create a supportive environment where they can thrive,” Hildah said.
In an interview, Hildah revealed that she went to college for a Certificate in Catering Services with Foundation College, then worked with prominent professional chefs around Bulawayo. She also said that she works closely with her brother, who helps her with ideas.
“I’m also in partnership with my one and only brother, Hissen Macheya. He helps with current healthy menus and how to handle customers from different cultures. He also does the pricing and administration while I focus on the practical work on the ground,” she said.
With a focus on inclusivity and empowerment, Hildah offers flexible working hours that accommodate the needs of her employees, many of whom are balancing work with parenting responsibilities. Local residents have responded positively to Hildah’s initiative, praising her commitment to the community.
“It’s inspiring to see someone taking such an active role in helping others succeed. Bliss Events and Cosmetics not only provides delicious food but also gives us hope and opportunities,” said Faith Nhete, a local supporter and single mother.
Sihle Mlilo, who is also a single mother, said that Hildah’s journey inspires them to pursue their own passions.
“Hildah’s story shows us that with determination, we can turn our dreams into reality, no matter the obstacles.”
A single mother who wishes to remain anonymous expressed how Hildah had helped her after her husband left her with nothing.
“Hildah’s journey resonates with me on so many levels. After my husband left, I felt completely lost and alone, but seeing how she built a successful business from the ground up gives me hope. She reminds me that we can rise from the ashes and create something beautiful. I thank her for being a beacon of strength, for being the best employer,” she said.
As the festive season approaches, Hildah is gearing up for a busy period with numerous events such as birthday parties and family reunions.
“I’m happy that the festive season is approaching, which means a busy schedule for us,” said Hildah.
Besides catering, Hildah is also involved in cosmetics.
“Cosmetics are a supplement that normally helps when business is down. Events do not happen every day, and sometimes some ladies will be counting on me, so I came up with cosmetics to help them. These include perfumes and body lotions,” she said.
