Police officer suspended for falling pregnant gets last laugh

Danisa Masuku

A 22-YEAR-OLD police officer who was suspended from work after she allegedly fell pregnant during a seven-day break from recruitment training has been acquitted and reinstated to the police force.

The woman, whose name is withheld for ethical reasons, recently appeared for trial before the police court and was represented by her lawyer Tinashe Dzipe.

Dzipe said the defaulter pleaded not guilty to contravening Paragraph 11 of the Schedule to the Police Act.

He stated that the allegation of falling pregnant during recruit training is untrue. Dzipe highlighted that the doctor who did the test consulted a gynaecologist via telephone and the gynaecologist told the doctor that the police officer was pregnant. He further said that evidence, without physical examination, was flimsy and inconclusive.

At the end of the trial, the woman was not found guilty and was acquitted.

Circumstances are that the defaulter is a duly attested member of the ZRP who was undergoing training at Ntabazinduna Training Academy attached to squad 33/21.

On 22 October the defaulter went on a course break for seven days and she reported for duty on 29 October.
