WHAT is really going on with the Chevrons?
We think all the team’s fans will agree with us that we have reached a point where we should be asking each other some very tough questions.
One of them is a simple one — where is our team going?
It appears that not even those who are in charge of our cricket know the answer.
The humiliation is unacceptable.
Yes, we know we are playing some of the best teams in the world and we know that Pakistan are a huge cricketing powerhouse and won the World Cup in the past.
But, this is a Pakistan side that has a number of younger and new faces and we should be seen to be competing against them, especially on our own turf.
What we have been seeing in Bulawayo is unacceptable. It has now turned into some sort of a men versus boys battle and we are being humiliated in every game.
Yesterday was bad.
As we reported on our digital platforms, it took just 40 minutes for Pakistan to dismantle Zimbabwe’s batting line-up in the second T20I at Queens Sports Club yesterday.
The Chevrons were bowled out for an abysmal 57 runs in their second T20I.
It’s our lowest total in all the T20I matches we have played.
This crushing defeat, which saw Pakistan wrap up the three-match series with an unassailable 2-0 lead, was a damning reminder of the gulf in quality between the two teams and the lack of fight from Zimbabwe.
The match was over in the blink of an eye.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Zimbabwe started well with 37/1 after 4.3 overs.
The run rate was healthy, the crowd was hopeful, and all seemed fine.
But just 40 minutes later, the entire Zimbabwean innings had collapsed, leaving the home crowd in stunned disbelief.
The fall from grace began with Tadiwanashe Marumani’s wicket in the fifth over, at 1:47PM followed by Brian Bennett just minutes later at 1:53PM.
What followed was a spectacular, almost unbelievable, series of wickets that tumbled at the rate of one every five minutes.
Zimbabwe’s innings disintegrated like a house of cards, and before anyone could blink, they were all out for 57.
The scene at Queens Sports Club was one of sheer frustration.
We understand the frustration because just like those who were at Queens yesterday, we are also fans of the Chevrons.
We are fans of all our national sports teams because they represent all of us.
They are carrying our country’s name on their jerseys and they are playing for us.
We are hurt when they lose in such a humiliating way.
We don’t know what the cricket authorities are thinking about all this but they should be told loud and clear that we can’t allow our team to sick so low.
They have to find the measures to arrest the slide because that is the reason they are in office.
We can’t continue to be pummelled like this.
