RENOWNED film practitioner Percy Soko has expressed his aspirations for a flourishing Zimbabwean film sector that transforms lives and enhances the country’s global visibility on the cinematic stage.
Soko, a veteran in the industry since 1988, is basking in the glory of his recent success at the Zimbabwe Film and Television Awards (Zaftas), which were held in Harare last Saturday.
For his role in Village 4, he received two accolades: The Outstanding Actor in a Television Production Award and the Excellence in Indigenous Cultural Expression on Screen Award.
Soko’s career spans notable productions such as Jaiva Sibone and $400 on DStv’s Zambezi Magic, Bazukuru on Amazon Prime, Mandla on ZBCtv and locally celebrated titles like Ezakomatshelela, Tshuz Mazikhethela, Amanxeba, Maliwe, and Village 4.
This month, he is set to further his impact as one of the curators for the Varsity Film Expo in Zambia, a testament to his dedication to the growth of the film industry in Zimbabwe and beyond.
Speaking to Chronicle Showbiz, Soko shared his vision for the future.
“My plans include establishing a bigger media house where all the magic will happen. I also want to help fellow filmmakers bring their projects to life and foster international collaborations,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Soko highlighted the challenges and triumphs of the past year.
“The year started slow, but things picked up before the final quarter. I managed to shoot two TV dramas I featured in and directed, which marked a significant improvement.”
On winning the prestigious awards, Soko described the recognition as a confidence booster and a call to strive for excellence.
“I feel humbled and honoured. Awards challenge you to work harder, and they’ve inspired me to produce high-quality works that can compete regionally and globally,” he said. – @mthabisi_mthire
