A football match between legends and former players from the Southern Region and those from the Northern has been organised for Monday at White City Stadium, as part of a new package for the Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run set for Sunday.

The match, which aims to raise awareness about drug and substance abuse, is expected to draw a large crowd and will kick-off at 3 pm.

“We want the legends to be the ambassadors of this campaign as they are an inspiration to the younger generation. We are hoping teams from around the city will bring their young teams so that they watch these legends,” said Liquor Hub director Raj Modi.

The charity match is part of a wider programme of events aimed at promoting athletics and giving back to the community.

Some of the names expected to feature in the Southern Region team include Hebert Dick, Douglas Mloyi and Peter Nkomo while the North will have the likes of Desmond Maringwa, Gift Phiri and Wonder Sithole.

The Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run Charity Race, which takes place on Sunday, has become a regular feature on the athletics calendar and will offer a lucrative prize pot to the winners.

In a major boost to athletics in the City of Kings, the Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run Charity Race is set to upgrade to a half-marathon next year.

The event will also move to a new venue, Nkulumane Complex.

This year’s 10km fun run will offer prize money to the winners, with the men’s and women’s champions each receiving R3 500.

The top three finishers in the junior men’s and women’s categories will receive R1 250, R800, and R600, respectively.

Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) chairperson Watson Madanyika praised the organisers for their commitment to supporting good causes.

“It’s great to see the organisers using the event to support the elderly in the City of Kings,” he said. “We are proud to be associated with an event that gives back to the community.”

Registration for the event is pegged at $5 for seniors and $3 for juniors. – @innocentskizoe
