POLICE in Matabeleland North Province have launched a manhunt for a man from Inyathi who allegedly killed his wife in cold blood with a shovel, following a domestic dispute.
Prince Ngwenya (35), of Thobekile Sibanda’s homestead in Masimini village, is being sought in connection with the death of his wife, Buhlebenkosi Ncube.
Reports indicate that Ngwenya struck Ncube several times with a shovel during an undisclosed argument, resulting in her immediate death.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda, confirmed the incident and stated that they are actively working to locate the suspect.
“I can confirm that a manhunt has been launched for Prince Ngwenya following a report of murder received on December 21, 2024, at 6 am at the ZRP Inyathi (Kenilworth Base),” said Insp Banda.
“The report indicated that Buhlebenkosi Ncube was struck multiple times with a shovel, resulting in her death at the scene.”
A police report states that on 20 December, 2024, at around 10pm, Ncube, her husband and their 24-year-old cousin, Nomaqhawe Thebe, were in the kitchen. After some time, Thebe went to sleep in another room, leaving Ncube and Ngwenya alone in the kitchen.
After about 30 minutes later, Thebe was awakened by the sound of screams and knocks on her bedroom door, as Ncube called for help. On opening the door, Thebe saw Ngwenya holding a shovel in one hand while grabbing Ncube’s hand with the other.
She also noticed that Ncube was bleeding heavily from her face.
Ngwenya allegedly attempted to strike Thebe with the shovel, but she managed to escape and observed from outside the fenced area. He then continued to assault Ncube, striking her multiple times until she fell to the ground.
Soon after the attack, Ngwenya fled the homestead with his belongings.
Police later discovered Ncube’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, with deep cuts on her face, forehead, mouth and limbs.
Her body was subsequently transported to the Inyathi District Hospital mortuary before being sent to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem. The shovel used in the crime was recovered at the scene.
“Investigations are ongoing, and we urge community members who may have an idea on the whereabouts of Ngwenya to report to any nearest police station,” appealed Insp Banda.
“It is disheartening to see individuals resorting to violence during the festive season, a time traditionally meant for reconciliation and celebration. We call upon community leaders and citizens to promote messages of peace and harmony for the sake of our collective humanity.”
