Prevent sexual abuse, exploitation

Dr Mazvita Machinga
SEXUAL abuse is a fundamental violation of an individual’s human rights to safety, dignity, and independence.
Every person has the right to make choices about their own body, and sexual abuse disregards this right completely.
Sexual abuse also causes physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological harm. It inflicts severe trauma, including injuries, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other health complications.
It also causes psychological damage causing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal thoughts, and long-lasting emotional scars.
The scary thing is that sexual abuse often spikes after and during festive seasons like Christmas and New Year.
These holidays are supposed to be times of enjoyment with family and friends, but if one is not careful these can be times where some people end up suffering. The holidays are typically a time of increased social interactions, parties, and gatherings where alcohol and drugs are often present and people tend to behave differently and stop being responsible.
This is coupled with reduced inhibitions and a festive atmosphere, which can create conditions where people may act irresponsibly or exploit others.
Reasons for increased sexual abuse post-Christmas:
Increased alcohol and drug consumption: Intoxication lowers judgment and can increase aggressive or predatory behaviour in some individuals.
High levels of social interaction: People often interact with strangers or acquaintances at parties and events, increasing the risk of encountering someone with harmful intentions.
Stress and emotional vulnerability: The holidays can bring up intense emotions, family conflicts, or loneliness, making some individuals more vulnerable.
Crowded and public spaces: Holiday events and travel often create opportunities for harassment in crowded settings.
The following are some of the ways you and me can prevent sexual abuse:
Set personal boundaries: Be clear about what you are comfortable with and communicate it firmly.
Avoid situations where you feel unsafe or pressured.
Alcohol consumption – This can cause serious issues when one is intoxicated. There is a myth that festive season cannot be enjoyed without alcohol but this is not a fact. You can still have joy without intoxicating yourself.
During this hot weathers people should stay hydrated and aware of surroundings.
Buddy system: Attend parties or gatherings with trusted friends who can watch out for each other.
Plan your transportation home together and avoid leaving alone as you can be a victim of thieves.
Know your environment: Familiarise yourself with the location of exits and seek out trusted people in the venue.
Trust your instincts: If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, leave the situation immediately and seek help.
For women: Avoid risky situations:
Stay in well-lit areas, avoid isolated places, and always inform someone you trust about your whereabouts.
Establish safety measures: Party hosts should ensure adequate security, offer non-alcoholic drinks, and monitor guests’ behaviour.
Encourage open communication: Families should create a safe space to discuss safety concerns, especially with younger women and teens.
Intervene when necessary: If you notice someone being harassed or acting inappropriately, step in or report it to authorities.
Let us work together to reduce the risk of sexual abuse and exploitation, especially during high-risk times like the Christmas and post-Christmas season. Report any suspicious activities to authorities and please avoid being a victim or even a perpetrator.
