A REPEAT offender who went on a rampage, attacking his granddad and grandma with a metal rod and a chair, for scolding him for smoking in the house, has been locked up in jail.
The court heard that Dube took offence when his grandfather scolded him for smoking inside the living room.
Breathing fire, Dube grabbed his grandfather Elliot Dube (82) by the throat.
He rained blows on the old man and hit him with a metal rod on the head, leaving him lying unconscious in a pool of blood.
The court heard he was not done wreaking havoc.
He turned his anger on his grandmother Sophy Dube (79) and hit her several times with a stool, leaving her gasping for air in a pool of blood.
On 29 January Lawrence Dube (49) appeared before Kezi resident magistrate Busani Sibanda facing two counts of physical abuse.
He pleaded guilty to both counts.
The magistrate convicted and sentenced him to four years imprisonment before suspending two years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence within a period of five years.
The court brought into effect three months which were suspended for an assault charge which he had committed in 2021. Both counts were taken as one, meaning Dube will effectively serve three years and three months behind bars.
In mitigation, Dube pleaded with the court to be lenient with him and said he is a first-time offender and pleaded guilty to both counts. He told the court that he is a father who looks after his minor children.
