ZUPCO EMPLOYEE RAPED JOB SEEKER, TOOK HER IN AS HIS WIFE, THEN DUMPED HER

Arron Nyamayaro

A ZUPCO employee allegedly lured a woman, who was looking for a job, into his office at the company’s depot in Belvedere, Harare, and raped her before the two stayed together as husband and wife for a year.

However, when Amon Manjengwa dumped the 22-year-old woman last month, and married another woman, she reported the rape incident to the police.

Manjengwa was arrested on Tuesday. The victim claims she went to the ZUPCO Belvedere Depot in December last year to apply for a job as a bus conductor.

Manjengwa, 44, then allegedly raped her and silenced her by promising to marry her and also helping her to get the job.

The two stayed as a couple until last month when Manjengwa dumped her and married another woman.

The 22-year-old woman then reported the rape to the police.

Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the arrest.

“Circumstances are that sometime in December 2023, the complainant went to drop off her Curriculum Vitae at ZUPCO, wishing to apply for a job as a conductor.

“The accused person approached the complainant and told her that he could help her get employed.

“The accused person asked the complainant to follow him into his office and she agreed.

“Whilst in the office, the accused person locked the door and instructed the complainant to give him her National Identification Card.

“The accused person told the complainant that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her first but she refused.

“The accused person then pushed the complainant to the floor and raped her once without protection.

“After the act, the accused person begged the complainant not to report the matter and promised to marry her.

“They stayed together as husband and wife until November this year when the accused person dumped the complainant and married another wife,” said Insp Chakanza.
