SASA FESTIVAL ON THE CARDS

Mangaliso Kabulika

THE University of Zimbabwe is set to host the SASA festival from March 28-29.

With the word ‘SASA’ being a street lingo for ‘speak’, the festival aims to bridge the gap between arts and healthcare.

It is organised by a part-four student, Getrude Munhamo-Pfumayaramba.

She told H-Metro that the festival will raise awareness and provide a platform to promote wellness for artists.

She said the event will provide access to resources, promote openness and honesty, encourage self-care practices, and foster community connection.

“The relationship between the arts and healthcare sectors in Zimbabwe is currently limited, with only a few initiatives focused on supporting the mental health of artists.

“It is always sad when stories of how artists were not okay surface after their unfortunate demise.

“Greater improvements can be achieved through increased awareness, education, and strategic partnerships between the two sectors.

“Promoting mental health programmes, specifically tailored for artists, fostering collaborations and creating safe spaces for dialogue can significantly enhance this relationship.

“Mental health professionals, artists, advocates and thought leaders will participate in panel discussions.

“We are also partnering with schools and universities, utilising social media and providing a safe environment for young people to share their experiences.

“The festival will expand with more events and we will establish partnerships and develop a year-round programme promoting mental health and wellness,” said Gertrude.
