IS this the end of the Big THREE?
The end of Highlanders, Dynamos and CAPS United as the heart and soul of domestic football.
Amid their silence, in a transfer window which has exploded with the arrival of the likes of Scottland and the refusal by champions Simba Bhora to be paralysed by the winds of change sweeping across the landscape, it’s hard not to feel sorry for the fans of the traditional Big Three of local football.
The Big Boys have lost major players in the past, notably DeMbare and Makepekepe being crippled by the mass exodus to Black Rhinos, but they always found a way to bounce back.
At the end of 2005, just after escaping relegation on the final day of the season, Dynamos lost virtually the entire team to Shooting Stars.
However, the Glamour Boys were champions, just two years later, and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in 2008.
History probably shows that the Big Boys can bounce back but the reality is that this is a different era and these are different challenges.
This isn’t the same Dynamos, which used to be powered by the power of thousands of their fans singing in the stands, as was the case in the past, making the likes of Evans Gwekwerere into heroes in his very first game.
Those Glamour Boys did not go for 11 years without winning the league title, as is the case today.
Bosso haven’t won the league championship for 19 years and CAPS United, the last among the Big Three to be crowned champions, have not won it in nine years.
Today, while the challengers to their dominance are making big moves, in terms of player transfers, all that the Big Three are doing is waving goodbye to the players and coaches they are losing to these ambitious clubs.
The frustration, among the fans can be seen in the responses, on the official Dynamos Facebook handle, when the club announced pre-season, for the new players, would get underway yesterday.
The response from Cuthbert Madzorera, one of their fans, was quite telling when he said:
“I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my concern and frustration about the lack of communication regarding the new players signed by the club,” he wrote.
“Recently, you announced the training date, which is exciting news for fans like me. However, it’s disappointing that there has been no update on the new players, including those promoted from the development side.
“As a loyal fan, I believe it’s essential to keep us informed about the team’s developments, especially during the transfer season.
“The silence is creating confusion and uncertainty among fans, and it’s affecting our enthusiasm and support for the team.
“With many teams strengthening their squads financially, it’s crucial for us to know what’s happening with our club. I urge you to release information about the new signings and promotions as soon as possible.”
Of course, those who are handling the DeMbare Facebook page did not reply to him.
