EDITORIAL COMMENT: WE FEEL FOR THE RUSIKE FAMILY

WE can only imagine the pain which the Rusike family of Masvingo are having to endure right now.

Their daughter, Lillian, who was a Great Zimbabwe University student, committed suicide on Wednesday.

She took her life after finding out that her boyfriend was a married man.

Lillian was just 22.

She has been described as a deeply religious God-fearing woman. Her friend, Mitchell Gumbo, told us on Sunday that she was on attachment at Masvingo Rural District Council.

Lillian was having a love affair with a man, only identified as Farai and, according to Mitchell, she loved him so much.

According to Mitchell, it was Farai who deflowered her because Lillian was so convinced that they were going to get married, after she completed her studies, and they were going to live happily ever after as husband and wife.

Farai had promised Lillian that he wanted to marry her, once she completed her university studies, and he wanted to introduce her to his relatives.

The lovebirds had been together for about a year.

Farai never told Lillian that he was a married man and he had two kids.

He kept lying to her that he was single and she was the woman he had chosen to have as his wife.

Lillian fell into this web of lies.

She is not the first woman to be deceived in such a way and she will not be the last.

Once she found out that Farai was a married man, it broke her heart and her world fell apart.

According to Mitchell all this went against everything she had stood for as a deeply religious woman and she felt that her life was over.

Lillian, who was laid to rest at Mhandamabwe Business Centre in Chivhu, was driven by pain to take her life.

She felt that was the best way out.

Of course, we know that is not the best way out because she should have sought help from her relatives, especially her aunts, and they would probably have found a way to help her.

Life is precious and people should not kill themselves because of romantic issues.

Before she met Farai, about a year ago, Lillian had lived her life and she was happy and focussed and chose to go to university.

She should have known that there was life after Farai because there was life before him.

Farai should feel ashamed of himself for deceiving this young man and taking advantage of her.

He shouldn’t have lied to her.

He should have told her the truth that he was a married man and left her to choose to get into this relationship or not to do so.

He should bear responsibility for the tragic turn of events.

He is the main reason why the Rusike family have lost a dear daughter and why people like Mitchell have lost a very good friend.

Real men do not lie to try and deceive women.
