Zimbabwe unveils first humanoid robot

The robot named Sophia has near human resemblance, language competency, movement and navigation using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer vision capabilities.

The robot named Sophia has near human resemblance, language competency, movement and navigation using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and computer vision capabilities.

This robot with female features was developed by Hanson Robotics.

It was brought to be showcased at the Zinbabwe AI and Innovation Week with support of the UNDP to promote the development of AI in Zimbabwe.

The country has embraced AI to drive it’s social and economic development.

Hanson Robotics operation director Katherine Yeung introduced Sophia, who was referred to as “VaChihera” by scores of people who thronged the UZ auditorium.

UZ is hosting the Zimbabwe AI and Innovation Week under the theme: “Reimagining the Future: AI and Innovation for Sustainable Development in Zimbabwe.”

Sophia was developed eight years ago by Hanson Robotics.
