ZIMBABWE received 1 000 tonnes of rice from India yesterday, marking a significant step towards ensuring food security in the country.
The handover ceremony took place in Harare, with Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister July Moyo being represented by his deputy, Cde Mercy Dinha.
Minister Moyo said when the rice is distributed, first preference would be given to the elderly and people with disabilities.
“The support we receive does not only reflect India’s commitment to humanitarian assistance, but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling the challenges faced by vulnerable populations,” said Minister Moyo
India’s generous contribution is in response to the Government’s appeal for food support after President Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster in April following a poor harvest from the 2023/2024 due to the El Nino-induced drought.
The United Nations has also called on the world to support the over six million food insecure people.
Minister Moyo added that partnerships like this one are vital in such times.
“The contribution from India will enable the Zimbabwean Government to reach more households struggling to put food on their tables,” he added.
Minister Moyo explained that the resources provided by India would facilitate immediate food assistance while also supporting long-term initiatives aimed at building resilience among vulnerable populations.
“This aligns perfectly with our national vision of empowering communities and achieving an upper middle-income status by 2030,” he said.
Indian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brahma Kumar, reiterated his country’s commitment to humanitarian assistance.
“This year, again, 1 000 tonnes of rice are being delivered from India to ease the pressure on the Government of Zimbabwe regarding food security.”
Ambassador Kumar also highlighted India’s intention to continue meaningful contributions to Zimbabwe’s infrastructure and connectivity.
He emphasised the importance of expediting the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between RITES, an Indian public sector undertaking, and the National Railways of Zimbabwe.
In addition, Jindal Steel and Power has signed two investment agreements with ZESA Holdings in August 2024, aimed at increasing electricity production at Hwange Power Station.
