She may not be young, as the popular television reality show on Netflix, ‘‘Young Famous and African’’, states, but she certainly embodies the essence of Africa.
Businesswoman and fashion icon, Zodwa Mkandla, stands as a paragon of fame and wealth, a serial entrepreneur whose boldness and beauty captivate all who encounter her.
Zodwa possesses an irresistible charm, a flair for style and an undeniable charisma that shines brightly in every endeavour she undertakes.
A lot of stories have been written about Zodwa, affectionately known as ‘‘Auntie Zozo’’, but her stint on television is something else.
Are we ready for more this year from her or it was just a six minute fling.
In recent weeks, Zodwa has taken the spotlight by storm, making a grand entrance as the opener of Season 3 of the much-anticipated Netflix series, ‘‘Young, Famous & African’’.
This dazzling reality show brings together a constellation of African stars, including the likes of Khanyi Mbau, Ini Edo, Shakib, Annie Macaulay-Idibia, Zari Hassan The Boss Lady, Swanky Jerry, Naked DJ, Nadia Nakai, Luis Munana, Kayleigh Schwark and Diamond Platnumz, weaving a tapestry of their extravagant lives filled with fashion, ambition, romance and the rekindling of old flames throughout South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania.
The series follows a vibrant ensemble of A-list entertainers as they navigate the thrilling highs and dramatic lows of their glamorous lives in Johannesburg.
Africa, well social media, was agog not on her as a new cast member but now many wanted to understand how she got there and her relationship with Namibian Big Brother housemate Luis Munana?
After months of speculation and anticipation, viewers were electrified to see Zodwa stepping into the role of marriage facilitator for her long-time friend, the illustrious Zari ‘‘The Boss Lady’’, and her beau, Shakib.
This was not just a personal triumph for Zodwa but a proud moment for Zimbabwe, which had been waiting for its moment to shine amidst the drama of the series.
Curiosity swirled around how Zodwa snagged this coveted role, especially given that Kudzai Mushonga, the Zimbabwean businessman linked with South African star Khanyi Mbau, had offered little in the way of fireworks in previous seasons.
Questions buzzed in the air: What does it take to join this ensemble? Are auditions held?
Is the series scripted?
With Zodwa’s sudden emergence, many wondered if Zimbabwe had finally found its voice on this platform.
After her debut, social media erupted when Namibian former Big Brother Africa contestant, Luis Tshita Munana, revealed that he had brought Zodwa as his date to Zari’s wedding.
But how did these two meet?
Was there a spark between them?
In an interview with The Herald on Saturday Lifestyle, Zodwa was eager to clarify.
“Luis and I are friends,” she declared with a sense of pride.
“He is a good friend, and we met in Zambia during the Lusaka July in 2023. As a fashion enthusiast, we just clicked. I can also confirm that Luis and I have a few business transactions we are working on together.”
Despite the public’s rampant speculation, Zodwa explained, “People need to understand that it is entirely possible for a man and a woman to be friends.
“The African community often struggles to grasp this concept. I am a special friend to him.”
Zodwa also said that people are somehow ignorant and talking now about Luis as if this was our first time meeting on the series.
“After our meeting in Zambia we discussed many business opportunities. I later invited him to the Miss Universe Zimbabwe and he was a guest judge. He has been to Zimbabwe. It is just that some people did not know much about him or they were ignorant, I don’t know. We are friends and business partners. For the record, we have also attended few events together as friends,” she explained.
Zodwa’s opening to the episode was nothing short of magical.
“My experience was amazing and I cherish that. For me, it symbolised a new chapter in my friend’s life, a beautiful union with her partner. My sole aim was to ensure the day unfolded flawlessly, and I was elated to see Zari so happy.”
As the ‘‘Rich Aunt’’ of the group, Zodwa remained coy about her future appearances in the series.
“I did not audition; it was more of an invitation from Zari,” she revealed, leaving her audience intrigued about what lies ahead.
Reflecting on her unexpected rise to fame within the series, Zodwa shared, “When I received the invitation, I was filled with trepidation. Zari has been my confidante for over 10 years, and I am the godmother to her two children with Diamond Platinumz. I never anticipated that I would be facilitating her wedding.”
Zodwa’s affection for Zari was palpable as she recounted her experience.
“Zari told me about her wedding theme, and because she is my friend, I eagerly stepped in to help. I approached the situation with an open heart, ready to support her on her special day.”
Having been a loyal viewer of the series, Zodwa could hardly believe she was now part of it.
“I stepped into the role without expectations, simply thrilled to be there for Zari. I was not given a script; instead, I was entrusted to design my own narrative. Zari had faith in me, and I ensured I delivered. That scene you saw we filmed it for two hours and it was not demanding as it was much of a natural feel.”
But what does her appearance in the series mean to the nation?
Upon entering the show what were here expectations?
“I was not sure what to expect, the first time I got invited I was scared,” she said.
“Zari told me about the wedding and her theme, because she is my friend, I said let me do it. I did not expect anything, I went in to support my friend at her wedding and I read the memo well and I executed.”
She said that she has been a staunch follower of the series but never thought one day she would see her face on television in the same reality show.
“Like I said, going into the show I did not know what to expect after watching previous episodes, I did not know what was going to happen and my role was simply to be the facilitator for my friend,” said Zodwa
“I was just happy for Zari and that is all.”
Her fashion choices were equally important.
“Zari’s wedding theme revolved around cream, nude, white and crystal. Understanding the importance of representation, I sought the artistry of Orapeleng Modutle, a distinguished South African designer known for his intricate, bespoke creations. Choosing the right dress was a challenge, yet I was determined to showcase not just my individuality but also to honour my country and my friend.”
Beyond the glitz and glamour of reality television, Zodwa shared her passion for golf, hinting at her aspirations for 2025. “I absolutely love golf and could play it all day,” she said, showcasing yet another layer to her vibrant personality.
Zodwa’s foray into ‘‘Young, Famous & African’’ is a testament to the beauty of resilience and the power of friendship.
Her presence on the show not only elevates her own narrative but also symbolises the importance of representation in the entertainment industry.
As the series unfolds, audiences are left eagerly anticipating the next chapter in this remarkable woman’s journey.
