Six killed in murder, hit and run cases

SIX people including two children have been killed in separate murder and hit-and-run cases recorded countrywide since last week.

Some of the suspects have been arrested while others are still on the run. 

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has since urged the public to avoid solving disputes through violent ways.

Over the weekend, police confirmed the arrest of Makneme Chikutuva (41) in connection with a case of murder which occurred at Village Midzi, Masvingo on January 11, 2025, in which Maxwell Manjonjo (42) died. 

The suspect allegedly assaulted the victim with ox yoke leather straps indiscriminately all over the body after accusing him of stealing a pot which contained sadza and chicken. 

On seeing that the victim was having difficulties breathing, the suspect carried Maxwell Manjonjo to Musingarahwi Business Centre in Masvingo, and dumped him.

Meanwhile, the ZRP is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Takunda Gwitira, who is being sought in connection with the same case.

Police in Harare are also investigating a case of murder which occurred along Gunguwo Street, Budiriro, Harare on January 10, 2025, at around 0300 hours in which a victim only identified as Honest died. 

The victim was apprehended by a mob on allegations of unlawful entry into premises where he allegedly grabbed the complainant (19) who was sleeping in her bedroom, at a house in Budiriro 5B, Harare. The mob assaulted the victim using wooden logs indiscriminately and left him for dead. The victim succumbed to the injuries.

The body of the victim was taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. Anyone with information must report at any nearest Police Station.

In another case, police arrested Tawanda Magoso (32) in connection with a case of murder which occurred at his house in Daakoni Village, Buhera on January 10, 2025, in which his son, Taonga Magoso (11) died. 

The suspect allegedly returned home from a shrine where he had gone for prayers and took an axe from his bedroom which he used to strike the victim indiscriminately all over the body. 

The victim’s head separated from its torso and sustained multiple injuries on the back. Resultantly, the victim succumbed to the injuries.

The suspect was later apprehended with the help of members of the community.

In Masvingo, police arrested, Blessing Chiromonyo (25) for murder which occurred at a water canal at Section 4, Triangle on January 8, 2025. 

The suspect got hold of her two daughters aged three and seven before diving into the water canal.

The children drowned after being swept away by water while the suspect managed to get out of the canal unhurt.

Investigations by the police established that the incident occurred after the suspect had accused her husband of infidelity.

Meanwhile, police in Bulawayo are investigating a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident which occurred at the 410 km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road near Khumalo Barracks, Bulawayo on January 11, 2025. 

A yet-to-be-identified male adult approximately 65-years-old died on the spot after he was hit by an unknown motorist who was driving a yet-to-be-identified type of motor vehicle. 

The driver did not stop. The victim, who is dark in complexion, medium built, and has grey hair, was wearing a black long-sleeved jacket, black trousers, a green raincoat, and no shoes.
