As the festive season approaches, the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has reminded the public to comply with road regulations and prioritise road safety.
In a statement, PAZ national coordinator Mr Tafadzwa Goliati said collective responsibility is important in reducing road carnage.
“Saving lives is everyone’s responsibility,” said Mr Goliati.
“Drivers, transport operators and passengers alike must work together to ensure that this festive season does not turn into a period of mourning for families. We urge all stakeholders to take road safety seriously.”
Mr Goliati said drivers should avoid drinking and driving and travelling during peak hours, adding that they should ensure that they are well-rested before embarking on long trips.
He called on transport operators to prioritise passenger safety over profit by maintaining roadworthy vehicles and adhering to safety regulations.
“Public service vehicles must be fully compliant with safety regulations. Taking shortcuts when it comes to safety can lead to devastating consequences.”
He said bus crews must ensure that passengers have unrestricted access to emergency exits and doors at all times.
PAZ also urged the Government and law enforcement agencies to increase highway patrols and impose stricter penalties on those who violate road safety laws.
Mr Goliati called for regular vehicle inspections and public awareness campaigns to ensure that both transport operators and passengers understand their roles in promoting safe travel.
As the nation prepares for the holiday season, Mr Goliati urged everyone to remain vigilant and responsible.
“Road safety is not just a Government issue; it is a societal issue. Let us make this festive season one to remember for all the right reasons.”
