The Officer-in-Charge of Matapi Police Station, Inspector Sphilisiwe Mushore, over the weekend helped a woman to deliver a healthy baby girl in the Magaba area of Mbare.
The woman, already in labour, had approached police officers on patrol seeking assistance.
Her situation got worse resulting in Insp Mushore assisting the woman to deliver the baby before the mother and baby were taken to a local hospital for attention.
Several people have since hailed Insp Mushore, saying she had shown the other side of the police, that of not only arresting offenders, but assisting members of the public.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi also said, “It’s confirmed that a woman once came to the police seeking help and she was in labour. The Officer-in-Charge took it upon herself to help the woman deliver a baby girl who was later taken to a local hospital.”
He also applauded Insp Mushore for assisting the woman.
“It is also part of the Police Service for officers to assist members of the public where necessary, even in cases which are not criminal,” Comm Nyathi said.
Meanwhile, Insp Mushore also posted a video on social media advising other fellow police officers on what was needed to help women in labour.
“At least one pair of gloves, two bandages or more, pain killers, a razor blade, preferably surgical razor blades. These items are and must be with every police officer. The festive season is unpredictable. We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. I love you Zimbabweans,” she said.
Posting on his X handle, one CadreShangrila also wrote, “Time to time a hero emerges from the ranks of the @PoliceZimbabwe. An exceptional display of skill and courage unfolded when the quick-thinking Officer-in-Charge at ZRP Matapi helped a woman deliver a beautiful bundle of joy in the Magaba area. Salute!”
Early this month, Police Commissioner General Godwin Matanga recognised more than 40 female police officers for excelling in curbing crime and sporting activities, among others.
The female officers who were rewarded were drawn from various departments and sections countrywide and the event was hosted by the ZRP Women Network.
They received trophies and certificates during the ceremony.
