Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe has announced an ambitious plan to transform local markets into modern facilities that meet global standards.
Speaking at the Minister meet media in Harare on Monday, Minister Garwe said there was a need to retrofit outdated infrastructure and create sustainable, efficient trading environments.
“We cannot achieve our goals with the current state of infrastructure. Transformation is essential, and we have already started making these changes,” he said.
Minster Garwe said the new traders’ market at Mbare will feature three floors, each dedicated to specific sectors which are hardware on the ground floor, perishables on the second, and ICT and gadgets on the third.
He said the project also includes offices for traders, developers and law enforcement, with enhanced facilities to ensure cleanliness and efficiency.
Minister Garwe said the existing provisional market would remain intact and complement the new development, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to sustainable growth.
“This initiative is about creating a modern, competitive environment for traders. We need everyone, including the media, to join us in making this vision a reality,” he said.
The development is a key part of the Government’s broader strategy to modernise infrastructure and enhance the country’s global competitiveness.
