Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona has praised the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) for its exemplary work ethic in advancing the vision of establishing a regional hub for world-class transport networks, logistics, and services by 2030.
He made these remarks during the CAAZ 7th Annual General Meeting in Harare on Thursday.
Minister Mhona emphasised the importance of annual general meetings (AGMs) for public entities and state enterprises, as mandated by the Public Entities and Corporate Governance (PECG) Act (Chapter 10:31).
He referenced Section 194 of the Zimbabwean Constitution, which calls for public entities to operate under democratic ideals that prioritise transparency and efficient resource use while upholding professional ethics.
“It is for this reason that CAAZ deserves commendation for adhering to regulations, as demonstrated by today’s AGM,” he said.
He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to the growth of the aviation sector, highlighting its crucial role in the nation’s economic progress.
Minister Mhona stressed the need for institutions to align with long-term policy frameworks, echoing President Mnangagwa’s mantra that “Zimbabwe is Open for Business”.
This directive aims to guide entities in fulfilling their mandates to achieve the national vision of an empowered and prosperous upper-middle-income society by 2030.
“As we approach the end of 2024, I express my gratitude to the Government, led by our President, for the landmark aviation projects completed this year,” he added.
Under the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), several key achievements were noted, including the commissioning of the Aviation Training Academy of Zimbabwe, which received ICAO TrainAirplus Certification in November 2024.
Additionally, the installation of a Secondary Surveillance Radar and the completion of the Air Traffic Control Communication System were highlighted, alongside the successful expansion of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and the commissioning of the VVIP Pavilion.
“These milestones reflect CAAZ’s relentless pursuit of excellence, guided by appropriate legal and policy frameworks such as the PECG Act and the Constitution,” Minister Mhona said.
As stakeholders, the Minister commended the work ethic of the CAAZ board and management, expressing hope that the AGM reports would reflect a commitment to good corporate governance.
He encouraged other entities within the Ministry’s purview to emulate CAAZ’s dedication to achieving the vision of a regional transport hub by 2030.
“The Government is committed to the growth of the aviation sector, and we will continue to support CAAZ and the entire aviation industry,” he said.
