The National Medical Excellence Awards (NMEA) institute honoured outstanding medical practitioners in Harare on Saturday night.
This was the second edition of the NMEA, which recognizes exceptional contributions in the medical field.
The guest speaker, Professor Samkange, a renowned urologist and distinguished medical educator, joined online as he was abroad and congratulated the winners.
“In my long time at the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health and Sciences, I found out that trainees were always afraid of examinations,” Professor Christopher Samkange said.
“The purpose of examinations is to assure the public that the doctors will receive the certificates when they are deemed fit to practice. This protects the public.”
Professor Samkange said the winners have shown exceptional performance.
Among the 70 practitioners honoured were Dr Johannes Marisa, who received awards for outstanding leadership in private medical practice, excellence in public health, and mentorship excellence in public health, among others.
Dr Marisa is a medical doctor at Westview Clinics and Westview Group of Schools, who is popular for providing free medical treatment to vulnerable Zimbabwean artists and sponsoring education for underprivileged children.
Other notable awardees included Dr Farzana Naeem, who received awards for outstanding contribution to mental health, excellence in clinical psychology, and leadership in healthcare advocacy, among others.
Professor Michael Ikeogu was honoured for his outstanding contribution to paediatrics, while Platinum Radiology received awards for excellence in diagnostic imaging, patient care and satisfaction, team excellence, and environmental sustainability.
The NMEA’s research team is dedicated to recognising the exceptional contributions of these heroes and heroines and to inspiring them to continue striving for excellence.
