Zimbabwe Republic Police Assistant Commissioner Peter Sibanda (Crime) has said law enforcement is a collective effort done through various security organisations.
Speaking during a meeting that is currently underway between the ZRP and security companies, Assistant Commissioner Sibanda said as security officers, they carry out law enforcement for different classes of crime.
“We all are law enforcers in our different castes and organisations. We carry out law enforcement for different classes of crime,” he said.
“The ZRP is the public policing agency, or if you want, one of the State law enforcement agencies. However, we do not operate in isolation.
“Private policing, or private security, as we commonly refer to it, is an important element as it complements public policing. That is what we are supposed to do, to complement each other.
Assistant Commissioner Sibanda expressed concern over the recent increase in armed robbery cases and said security officers need to have proper training in weapons handling and the use of firearms.
He also highlighted the need for security companies to thoroughly check the backgrounds of the people they employ.
The meeting is being attended by more than 20 officials from various security companies.
