Gwanda Tshitaudze shine at KCD Mohadi tourney

Thupeyo Muleya in GWANDA

The GWANDA-Tshituadze constituency’s netball and soccer teams lifted the inaugural KCD Mohadi sports tournament in a contest held in honour of Vice President Kembo Mohadi at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda yesterday.

Scores of people from Matabeleland South’s 12 constituencies gathered at the stadium for the sports tournament that ran from Saturday to Sunday.

The netball and sports tournament featured select teams from all the 12 constituencies under Matabeleland South province.

The event was organised by the Zanu PF Youth League Matabeleland South province in honour of the Vice President.

Gwanda Tshitaudze and Gwanda South netball and soccer teams were crowned champions after beating Gwanda South teams, respectively.

In the soccer segment, Peter Gore scored the only goal for Gwanda Tshitaudze that sent the crowd into song and dance.

Beitbridge West was crowned third after beating the Mangwe constituency football team 1-0.

In netball, Gwanda Tshitaudze beat Gwanda South with 28 goals to 11 in the final.

The Umzingwane netball team settled for third position.

All the winning teams won cash prizes of R175 000 (number 1), R90 000 (second) and R30 000 for third place teams.

Speaking on behalf of the organisers, Moses Langa said the idea to have the tournament was muted in May last year and the team were selected starting from the wards level.

He said the event will be held annually on a rotational basis in all the 12 constituencies.

“This was a huge success, and we are going to build on the gains of this first tournament for future events,” said Langa.

“As the youths, we are proud with the leadership of our Vice President and hence we came up with this idea to honour him through this tournament that will promote sports development in the province and the nurturing of talent among the youths.”
