Festive Season: Creatives prioritise family time

Tomorrow is Christmas Day, a time when Christians and non-believers alike around the globe come together to celebrate and make merry.

The festive season often features large gatherings and unique celebrations, especially among local celebrities and influencers.

Sungura star Alick Macheso, who began holding daily shows last Friday leading up to New Year’s Eve, has exciting plans for his fans and family.

Speaking through his publicist and confidant, Tichaona Makahamadze, the Orchestra Mberikwazvo camp said:

“He will spend time with his family before holding live shows. Alick is a family man and always prioritises them. Although he has a busy schedule, family comes first for him.

“He always puts his family first, even though he spends much of his time with fans holding a series of shows countrywide.

“Holding shows is his calling, and we can’t deny that fact.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by Somandla “Mafia” Ndebele, who recently lost his mother, a well-known philanthropist in Dzivaresekwa, Harare.

He expressed his commitment to giving back to his community.

“I always make sure to spoil my neighbours in Dzivaresekwa. I learnt this culture of generosity from my mother, who was respected in our community. While I will hold a show on Christmas Day in Glendale alongside Baba Sharo (Alick Macheso), I will do my best to ensure that my community is remembered.

“I love giving and sharing because my mother, who had a heart for the poor, taught me to share.”

The Denda Brothers leader urged people to respect the sanctity of life, especially during this time of the year.

“It is during this season that some people lose their senses and end up attacking each other. We should never fight, but learn to respect one another if we want to progress in life.”

Theatre guru Daves Guzha, who has revitalised a genre on the brink of collapse, will conclude the year on a high note.

He is hosting the widely travelled and adored Victoria Falls-based music group Mokoomba on Boxing Day at the Arts House Theatre in Harare Gardens.

“To close out the year, we are hosting two critical events: Mokoomba on the 26th, followed by a fantastic mbira performance. We will celebrate the year with songs that herald the coming of the new year,” Guzha stated.

The veteran visual artist was committed to ensuring that theatre regains its glamour in 2024. Several plays were staged at his theatre hub, and comedy was also revived, marking a significant resurgence for this genre.

Visual artist Sarah Kuhwenguva from the Swiss-Zim Heritage Gallery plans to spend the festive season in her home area with fellow creatives.

“The festive season is the perfect time to celebrate, but we must do so responsibly.

We don’t want to lose lives; we want to continue honouring them. As a visual artist, my message is to see every community equipped with an arts centre,” she said.

Kuhwenguva added:

“As we approach 2025, let’s carry our past with us to relive and enjoy the future, ensuring that tomorrow is always bright. It’s time for us to nurture our arts and culture, preserving the heritage of our great ancestors for future generations.”

She also expressed gratitude to the hardworking creatives who made a difference in 2024:

“Cheers to a future rich with arts and cultural heritage at its core. A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated volunteers, partners, supporters, customers and followers.

I wish you all a fantastic festive break and the best for 2025 ahead. Your ongoing support is greatly appreciated, and I look forward to collaborating throughout 2025 and beyond.”

Literary arts guru Chirikure Chirikure, known for promoting the genre, shared his wisdom with fans:

“I urge people to be cautious during the festive season. Personally, I will be home with family, as I prioritise this time to reconnect with my loved ones,” said Chirikure.

“Life is too short for us to be enemies. We need to change and show love during this festive season. We must make a difference in each other’s lives.

“My message to all Zimbabweans is to respect and love one another. We can only prosper by uplifting each other, rather than causing harm, which has unfortunately become the norm.”
