Two Harare men were recently convicted by the Harare Magistrates Court on two counts of falsely labelling their sugar to deceive customers into believing that they were buying 2kg packets.

Enerst Gwetsai (30) of Glenview 1 and Forget Dzapasi of Glen Norah A were initially sentenced to 12 months in prison before four months were suspended for five years.

Another eight months were suspended on condition that they perform 210 hours of community service.

The two were also fined US$100 for selling the sugar without any invoices.

It was the Stateโ€™s case that the duo falsely labelled their sugar and sold it with no invoices.

Their brown sugar which was labelled 2kg weighed between 1.243kg and 1.33kg per pack.

Police detectives who purchased a case of sugar from a shop located in Harareโ€™s CBD in June 2024 uncovered the illegal activities.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the accused were the suppliers of the sugar. The duo could not produce any invoices or delivery notes for the sugar.
