The Bulawayo Theatre is set to transform into a vibrant hub of creativity and culture next week Friday as it hosts the inaugural “Ubuntu Culture Night”.

This event will shine a spotlight on the diverse talents of local artistes from Matabeleland, celebrating music, fashion, dance, and poetry in a night designed to resonate with families and culture enthusiasts alike.

Bhila (real name Patriach Joel Welcome Manyabi) one of the event’s organisers and a performing artiste himself, articulated the essence of Ubuntu Culture Night with fervour.

“This event seeks to promote local artistes from Matabeleland. It’s more than just a show; it’s a platform to create everlasting memories while opening doors for artistes to connect with international networks.”

In Bhila’s vision, this night embodies the spirit of community, collaboration, and cultural pride.
The culturally-charged event is set to feature an impressive line-up that includes some of Bulawayo’s most celebrated talents, such as Vuyo Brown, Thandy Dhlana-Jele, and Khaya Arts. The excitement does not stop there – audiences can also look forward to performances from Ihawu Lesizwe, Thaluso Da Poet, Dr Gasolo, Matojeni Melo-Maniacs, Bhila himself, Amaqaqa Acappella and Dziba Lemvula. The evening will be expertly hosted by spoken word specialists, Sithokozile “Um’Africakazi” Dube and Obert “The African Poet” Dube, ensuring the audience is engaged and entertained throughout the night.

A key figure in the event’s organisation is Timothy Mlalazi, a founding member of the renowned group, Ihawu Lesizwe. Bhila expressed gratitude for Mlalazi’s involvement, noting, “We’re honoured to have him on board. His contributions have been invaluable, and working with someone of his calibre is a priviledge.”

Bhila, who also sits in the Zimbabwe Musicians Union (ZiMU) board said what makes Ubuntu Culture Night particularly special is its collaborative spirit. The artistes themselves are taking an active role in promoting the event, demonstrating a commitment to building their own brands and supporting one another.

“This event is not just about the performances. It’s about the collective effort of the artistes involved. They are not only performing but also helping to sell the show,” he said.

The event has also formed a notable partnership with “Rainbowcolours”, a Switzerland-based African gallery. Their involvement opens up significant networking opportunities for local artistes, potentially paving the way for international recognition.

“This partnership is a huge step for our local creatives,” Bhila explained.
“It’s about exporting Bulawayo’s music and culture to the world, allowing our artistes to grow their brands beyond borders.”

Ubuntu Culture Night is designed to be a family-friendly event, making it a perfect outing during the festive season. In the spirit of Ubuntu, the organisers have incorporated a philanthropic element, pledging to donate Christmas food hampers to families in need.

“This is our way of giving back to the community and embodying the spirit of togetherness and sharing,” Bhila shared.

As the first edition of what is envisioned as an annual tradition, Ubuntu Culture Night aims to cultivate a larger cultural movement in Bulawayo.

“This is just the beginning,” Bhila asserted.
“We hope to make this a yearly event, growing it into something even more impactful for artistes and the community.”

The goal is clear, to nurture a vibrant arts scene that rivals established festivals like Shoko Festival and Munch ‘n’ Sip. Bhila passionately urged the people of Bulawayo to come out in support of this cultural celebration.

“It’s not just a show; it’s a chance to celebrate our culture, support local talent and create memories as a community,” he said. — @MbuleloMpofu
