PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has lauded churches for their positive roles including contributing to the country’s development.
The Salvation Army Church leadership yesterday paid a courtesy call on the President at State House in Harare.
In an interview after the closed-door meeting, Salvation Army Territorial Commander Commissioner Daniel Kasuso said they had fruitful deliberations with President Mnangagwa which saw him commend the church for its efforts in fostering national cohesion.
“The President was thankful for the role the church is playing in the country. He knows the schools and hospitals we have in Zimbabwe so he encouraged us to remain aiding the country’s development.
“We had come to just pay a courtesy call on the President because me and my wife were working for the Church in Nigeria so now we are back and we thought to just come and familiarise with President Mnangagwa because we cannot just come back and start operating in the country without meeting with the country’s leadership.
“We just wanted the President to know us and we also let him know that we are there to support the Second Republic,” he said.
Commissioner Kasuso said the Salvation Army Church would continue supporting Government interventions as well as complement its initiatives.
The Salvation Army had been actively involved in cushioning families during the El Nino-induced drought.
“We also let him know that as Salvation Army we have schools and hospitals across the country. The role of the church is to spread the word of God and encourage people to leave wrongdoing and draw closer to God.
“Churches also ought to play a complementary role in Governance issues across the country. For example, the Salvation Army availed food relief to cushion Zimbabweans from the El Nino-induced drought. We were able to help and add to what the Government is currently doing,” Commissioner Kasuso said.
President Mnangagwa has continued to reiterate the role of churches in nation building.
“I challenge other churches to also embark on various projects that help sustain the livelihoods of our people and communities for the overall prosperity of our beloved motherland Zimbabwe.
“Let us continue building our country, communities and families brick by brick, step by step and stone upon stone, guided by our national development philosophy, Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabaninilo,” said the President at an Easter Passover Festival in Masvingo earlier in the year.
