HIPPOPULA, the newest entertainment destination in Mpopoma suburb, Bulawayo, had a grand launch on Friday with a vibrant and electrifying event that drew crowds from across the city.
Strategically located alongside the iconic Bulawayo-Victoria Falls railway line, Hippopula promises a unique ambiance that everyone was eager to experience.
At first glance, the exterior of Hippopula is adorned with stunning murals of iconic Zimbabwean figures such as the late Father Zimbabwe, Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo, President Mnangagwa, and the late former President Robert Mugabe.
As one steps inside, the venue boasts a cosy and vibrant setting with its striking VIP section. Its blue and white couches exude comfort and elegance that add a particular charm to the artistic and nostalgic appeal of Hippopula.
The railway line adds to Hippopula’s distinctive charm by creating a laid-back vibe, a perfect place for patrons to relax and enjoy their time in the venue.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce, Raj Modi, who was the guest of honour at the event, lauded the initiative behind Hippopula.
“The opening of this place will go a long way in curbing the problem of drug and substance abuse. Many youths will find employment here, and such ventures are vital in developing our nation. I urge the youth to resist the temptations of drugs and embrace positive opportunities like this,” he said.
The event featured lively performances and a captivating atmosphere. DJs, including Skaiva, kept the crowd on their feet, while live acts added an extra layer of excitement.
Highlights included Mzistozz Mfanafuthi and his dance group, whose high-energy performance captivated attendees.
Mzoe7 delivered an electrifying rendition of Jaycee’s remix hit Ungayithi Vuu, prompting a raucous singalong.
Mazirudo hit-maker ExQ charmed the audience with his classic hit, evoking nostalgia and serenading the crowd. Jah Master closed the night with an explosive performance of his hit Bhawa Kurira. His infectious energy and dance moves left the crowd in awe.
Attendees were thrilled with the venue’s offerings and the festive atmosphere.

Abraham Ndlovu, who attended with friends, praised the overall experience.
“This is a perfect spot for a chill. The service was excellent, the beer was cold, and the security was accommodating. We had a blast.”
The passing of a goods train added an unexpected yet delightful twist to the night. The train driver hooted in greeting, and the crowd responded with waves, screams, and whistles, creating a moment of communal joy.
With its prime location, ample parking, and festive spirit, Hippopula promises to become a key feature of Bulawayo’s social scene.
