GWERU City Council has taken a proactive step in environmental conservation by planting over 400 trees as part of the National Tree Planting Day commemorations.
The local authority has announced ambitious plans to plant more than 1000 trees by the end of the year.
Speaking during the launch of the council’s tree planting initiative at a local hotel, Gweru Mayor, Councillor Martin Chivhoko, stressed the importance of environmental stewardship.
“I am proud to be part of this initiative that seeks to promote environmental conservation and sustainability in our city,” he said.
Clr Chivhoko said the local authority is committed to creating a greener and healthier future for Gweru’s residents and future generations.
“As we gather here today, we are reminded of the critical role trees play in our ecosystem. They provide oxygen, food, shelter, and habitats for countless animal and plant species,” he said.
Clr Chivhoko also underscored the vital role trees play in combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
“Despite their immense importance, trees face growing threats from deforestation, urbanisation, and climate change. It is our collective responsibility as citizens of this great city to take action and protect our natural environment,” he said.
The mayor described the tree planting day as a significant annual event aimed at promoting environmental conservation and fostering community participation in greening efforts.
“This year, we have set a target of planting over 450 trees across the city, with a goal of reaching 1 200 trees by December 31, 2024. I am proud to say we are well on track to achieving this milestone,” said Clr Chivhoko.
He urged residents to view tree planting as an investment into the future.
“As we plant these trees today, let us remember that we are not just planting trees but also nurturing a future that is green, sustainable, and prosperous for all,” he said.
Clr Chivhoko said the initiative is part of broader efforts to combat the effects of climate change and promote urban greening.
