THE Morgan Foundation football tournament, which was initially scheduled for this past Sunday at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda, has been postponed to January 11 at the same venue.
The change of dates follows the booking of the stadium for a national event on Sunday.
Morgan Milton Nare, the founder of the Morgan Foundation, confirmed the postponement.
“We were informed about the KCD Mohadi Tournament Provincial Finals on the same day (Unity Day) at Phelandaba Stadium and we had to honour and respect our Vice President hence we postponed our tournament. We will have it on January11 and the same teams will participate. These are Gwanda Pirates FC, Super Strikers FC, Jordan FC and Ajax Hotspurs FC),”said Nare.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub, Nare – a Sports and Recreation Management graduate and a CAF-licensed grassroots coach at Northerns Football Club (South Africa) – expressed his excitement for the event while also showing gratitude to the Gwanda community for their continued support.
The tournament will also serve as part of the participating teams’ preparations for the 2025 season. Gwanda Pirates will be competing in Division One next season while the other three teams will play in the lower division.
“It’s going to be exciting because the community will get a glimpse of how the coming season will unfold. Clubs will use this tournament to assess players,” said Nare.
Former Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows, Chicken Inn and Highlanders player, Kudakwashe Mahachi, will be the guest of honour. Former Warriors international Gilbert Banda, who was also due to attend, will no longer be able to as he will be out of the country at the time.
Nare explained that his aim is to contribute to the growth and development of football in Gwanda.
