Government ministries hail prevailing peace in Zimbabwe

GOVERNMENT has praised the prevailing peace in Zimbabwe, attributing it to the historic 1987 Unity Accord, a pact between Zanu (PF) and PF-Zapu with officials saying the accord has enabled the nation to focus on its developmental goals and attract foreign investment.

Yesterday marked 37 years since the signing of the Unity Accord, which was agreed upon by the late former President Robert Mugabe, representing Zanu (PF), and the late Vice-President Dr Joshua Nkomo of PF-Zapu. The accord ended early post-independence unrest and ushered in an era of peace and stability.

Since then, Zimbabwe has enjoyed relative peace despite efforts by external forces to destabilise the country. As the country celebrated Unity Day, Government departments reflected on the importance of the accord, emphasising its role in fostering inclusive development.

In a statement, the Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Ministry, led by Dr Jenfan Muswere, celebrated Unity Day as a testament to what Zimbabwe can achieve through solidarity.

“The historic signing of the Unity Accord in 1987 laid a strong foundation for the prevailing peace and development that the country enjoys. As we celebrate this day, let us cherish the unity and tranquillity that defines our great motherland. Anchored on these crucial building blocks, Zimbabwe is on course to attain Vision 2030. Together we can,” said the statement.

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion led by Professor Mthuli Ncube, highlighted the role of peace in economic progress.

“The Ministry cherishes national unity, peace and stability, which are invaluable prerequisites for economic development and the attainment of the country’s vision of an upper-middle-income economy by 2030,” the statement read.

“When Zimbabweans unite, they create a stable and attractive environment for investment, stimulating economic growth. The improved national tranquillity fosters the successful implementation of key development programmes like the National Development Strategy.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, led by Professor Amon Murwira, also underscored the significance of the Unity Accord in advancing Zimbabwe’s foreign policy.

“Zimbabwe is guided by three foundational doctrines to achieve this vision; Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa ngabaninilo, a doctrine that underscores the importance of self-reliance.

“A friend to all and an enemy to none, a doctrine that highlights Zimbabwe’s commitment to peaceful co-existence and collaboration with all nations and Zimbabwe is Open for Business, a doctrine that positions Zimbabwe as a welcoming destination for investment, showcasing its readiness to engage with the international community and foster economic partnerships,” said the ministry.

“The pursuit of these doctrines would not have been possible without the commitment to peace established by the Unity Accord.”

The Ministry of Defence described the accord as a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe’s history, stating that the day reminds citizens of the strength that comes from unity and collective commitment to peace and reconciliation.

“It is very important that as a people we continue to guard jealously this lifelong achievement for generations to come. This important day reminds us of the strength that comes from unity and our collective commitment to peace and reconciliation in a country where no place and no one is left behind as we march towards the attainment of Vision 2030,” reads the statement.

“Let us reflect on the importance of standing together as a nation, for in national unity we derive our strength to push forward our Vision, a legacy which we will pass on to the next generations.”

The Defence Ministry said it will continue to defend the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) linked the country’s peace to its growing regional leadership.

“This year’s unity day celebrations are particularly significant as Zimbabwe has assumed the SADC chairmanship through His Excellency, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa. The country successfully hosted two SADC summits, showcasing the country’s dedication to regional integration and development,” read the statement.

ZRP said these achievements underscore Zimbabwe’s commitment to playing a pivotal role in fostering unity and progress across the region.

“In this regard, the Second Republic’s implementation of transformative policies has seen the country consistently making steady progress in infrastructure development, economic growth, and re-engagement efforts to rebuild goodwill and court investor confidence,” stated the ZRP.

The ZRP reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order as the nation works toward its developmental goals, emphasizing the importance of a secure environment for achieving Vision 2030.

“The ZRP remains focused on ensuring that peace and stability prevail as the country rallies towards meeting the set national and developmental goals. Therefore, a safe and secure environment is essential for achieving Vision 2030. The ZRP is committed to maintaining law and order without fear or favour for the benefit of all Zimbabweans,” said ZRP. — @nqotshili
