Dynamic line-up for inaugural #53 Nkayi Fest

In a landmark effort to promote music and create opportunities for artistes in Nkayi District, Matabeleland North Province, the #53 Nkayi Festival is set to make its debut this December.

The brainchild of artistes, Intombi Yabelungu, Precious Diana INdlovukazi, Collen Moyo, and Bheki Fuzane, the seven-day festival will run from Christmas Day to New Year’s Eve.

 It will span multiple locations across the district, kicking off on December 25 at Gonye Shopping Centre. Subsequent venues include Nkayi Shopping Centre (December 26), Gwelutshena Shopping Centre (December 27), Nyaje Shopping Centre (December 28), Mateme (December 29), Khomaya Shopping Centre (December 30), and concluding at Mpumelelo koJunction on December 31.

The line-up boasts over 20 performers, including Bheki Fuzane and Maduma Express, Collen Moyo and Firm Gospel Foundation, Intombi Yabelungu, Precious Diana iNdlovukazi, Sicelo Sibbs Jamela, The Melodious Psalms, Mxola and Kusile Brothers, Mamthi The Boiling Pot, Khehlelidala, Mapoteholes, and Mqabuleni. Also set to perform are Minister Phenius, Pastor Nkundla, Mchasisi Dube, Manyoba, Nqam’Ebomvu, Magwizi Comedy, Uvava Inkayishana Lukamapheqa, Quincy Gqoka Moyo, Intenjani Indiyazela, Magazi Primary School, Magazine Primary School, Sisters of Paradise, and many other local talents.

Speaking about the festival, musician, Intombi Yabelungu said Nkayi is set to become a hub of artistic expression and community spirit. 

She shared her excitement, urging Nkayi residents to prepare for a vibrant celebration of creativity and culture.

“The highly-anticipated festival, organised by a dynamic group of local creatives, will deliver a week-long celebration of music, art, and community spirit. With performances by over 20 artistes, this festival will captivate and inspire audiences,” she said.

She added that performances will run from 9am to 6pm daily, with affordable entrance fees of USD$2 for adults and USD$1 for children, making it a family-friendly event.

Musician, Collen Moyo highlighted the festival’s broader mission to gain recognition for local talent while addressing social issues like youth drug abuse.

“The Nkayi Festival is not just about entertainment; it’s about empowering our community. By mentoring emerging artistes and fostering sustainable careers in the arts, we aim to inspire future generations,” he said.

Moyo also highlighted the diverse mix of established and rising stars in the line-up, ensuring an unforgettable experience for attendees.

“This festival is about uplifting the Nkayi community and using the arts as a tool for positive change and development. We’re committed to creating a platform for artistes to shine while promoting self-reliance and celebrating local culture,” he added.  — @mthabisi_mthire
