ZIMBABWE is set to compete against five other African nations in the WBSC African Youth Baseball5 Championships, taking place from today till Sunday in Cape Town, South Africa.
They will go against Tunisia, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Lesotho. The top four finishers will advance to the semifinals, with the winners earning a spot in the WBSC Youth Baseball5 World Cup 2025 in Mexico.

“We are excited to compete against the best teams in Africa. Baseball5 is a growing sport in Zimbabwe, and we believe our team has what it takes to make a strong impression. This is a great opportunity for our young players to gain international experience and showcase their skills. We are confident that they will make us proud and bring home a medal. Our team has been training hard and we are ready for the challenge,” said Mudzingwa.
“The WBSC African Youth Baseball5 Championships is a prestigious tournament that attracts the best teams from across the continent. We are honoured to be participating and we look forward to competing against the likes of Tunisia, South Africa and Ghana.
“Our goal is to win one of the two spots available for the WBSC Youth Baseball5 World Cup 2025 and make history for Zimbabwean baseball,” said Mudzingwa.
Baseball5 is a fast-paced youth-focused urban discipline and small-sided version of baseball or softball.
It was first established by the World Baseball Softball Confederation in 2017.
It is a five aside game (three male plus two female players) played over five innings.
It is a street version of baseball or softball that requires virtually no equipment and can be played anywhere.
Baseball5 was included in the sports programme of the Youth Olympic Games Dakar in 2022.
