Suicide after man accuses wife of cheating and witchcraft

A 41-YEAR-OLD man from Burnside suburb in Bulawayo was found hanging dead in his garage on Sunday following a fight over allegations of infidelity with his wife.

Bulawayo Deputy Provincial Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the death of David Mujuru, saying that he was first seen by his nephew, who had unlocked the garage to get his grandmother’s car.

Mujuru’s mother, Beauty Mutswangwa (71) informed the police after witnessing the disturbing scene, and the police promptly attended to the scene.

According to Ass Insp Msebele, Mujuru was recently involved in a car accident, which he attributed to his wife’s infidelity and her alleged lover’s evil intentions.

When he committed suicide, he was also wanted by the police for physical abuse as he had assaulted and strangled his wife over those allegations of infidelity.

Mujuru left a note saying he was dying to give his wife and her alleged lover “freedom and joy.”

The note was written in IsiNdebele and it reads “Usale ukholisa labantwana losaBrayeni wakho hanti wangihambela emuntwini ukuthi ngitshayiswe yimota lisale likholisa kodwa lizangilandela . . .” which loosely translates to English as: “Enjoy life with Brian’s father, as both of you visited a traditional healer to bewitch me, hoping I would die in a car accident, so you could enjoy life together . . . But soon, you will be following me to the grave.”

The police found Mujuru hanging from a garage beam with a white electric cable tied around his neck. Both his feet were touching the ground.

Mujuru was wearing sandals, a pink/reddish track bottom, black shorts inside the track bottom with a black waist belt, a grey/blue track top, a white T-shirt inside the track top, and a grey woollen hat with a blue lining.

A search of Mujuru’s body revealed a Vivo cellphone, plain paper, matches, cigarettes, and Rufedo paracetamol pills in his pockets. He also had a laceration on his right cheek.

Mujuru’s body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for a post-mortem.

His wife, Sibonginkosi Moyo, who was choked and suffocated by Mujuru, was referred to UBH.

Ass Insp Msebele said “Investigations are ongoing and we caution men to seek advice and counselling before resorting to taking their own lives amid life challenges. Taking one’s life is not a solution and can lead to more problems in communities. Men should consider the impact on their children, who would be left as orphans,” she said.

Bulawayo has been recording cases of suicide frequently.

Recent statistics show that there were 21 cases of suicide in Bulawayo from June to October, with 20 of the victims being men.

This highlights the need to control and reduce the prevalence of suicide among men in Bulawayo.
