In African culture a father is a respected figure and insulting him is taboo.
However, Daniel Fadzai Mhondera (21) crossed the red line when he allegedly hurled insults at his father Victor Kudakwashe Mhondera (49) and also threatened to kill him.
This was after the pair were involved in a heated argument where Daniel decided to emerge as the winner and branded his father while pointing his middle at his face.
Daniel went a gear up in his threats as he threatened to wake up during the middle of the night and kill him. Fearing for his life his father reported him to the police leading to his arrest.
Daniel appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Evia Matura last Friday facing a charge of threats of future violence as defined in section 3(1) (f) of the Domestic Violence Act. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
The magistrate sentenced him to pay US$100 fine and failure to that he would spend 60 days in jail.
In arriving at the sentence, the magistrate said she considered that Daniel was a first-time offender and he showed remorse as he pleaded guilty to the charge.
In a victim impact statement, Victor described his son as a spoilt brat adding he disrespects him.
โHe is disrespectful and has lowered my dignity in the eyes of my family,โ he said.
