WARD 17 development committee in Bulawayo is appealing for assistance to help a family whose four-roomed house in Pumula North suburb was gutted by fire last month.
The family’s property was burnt to ashes due to a suspected electrical fault.
In an interview, the section leader of Zone 2C, Linnie Sibanda said that they were appealing for help to rebuild their neighbour’s house.
“A resident’s house was gutted down by a fire on 23 December 2024 at around 2pm as a result of an electrical fault. The fire started 30 minutes after electricity was restored after a power cut and the smoke was seen by some neighbours who immediately contacted the family. While the neighbours were waiting for the arrival of the family, they were removing some items through the backdoor and the bedroom window,” she said.
Sibanda stated that the fire destroyed the family’s property and power supply.
“The fire destroyed the roof, power supply, doors, household appliances, buckets and a solar panel that was in the house,” she said.
Sibanda indicated that residents have contributed groceries, clothes and some money to help the family.
“The residents and other stakeholders have played a huge role in helping the family by donating groceries, clothes, blankets and some money. We have raised about R1372 and US$117, which we have used to buy asbestos and we are currently left with fixing the power supply,” she said.
Ward 7 Councillor Sikhululekile Moyo applauded the community members for helping the family in dealing with this predicament.
“I’m impressed by the work being done by the community and other stakeholders in helping the family.
We have received a number of donations and we are appealing to well-wishers to help us refurbish the house,” she said.
