Up and coming Ndebele novelist, Emmanuel Shelton Ndlovu, from Filabusi, Matabeleland South province is gearing up to release his first ever literary sensation titled Awu Nkosi Yami Ngelami Ilifa on 4 December.
The highly anticipated novel explores the intricate web of family relationships and the consequences of greed.
“I was inspired by real-life observations of how families often struggle with conflicts over inheritance. These conflicts can reveal hidden tensions and unresolved issues within families, and I wanted to explore this dynamic in my writing”, said Ndlovu.
Through his work, Ndlovu reflects on his experiences growing up within the Ndebele community.
“My writing draws heavily on my experiences within the Ndebele community, where family values and cultural traditions are central. I wanted to explore how these values can sometimes come into conflict when material wealth or inheritance becomes a focal point,” said Ndlovu.
Despite the challenges of writing in isiNdebele, Ndlovu remains committed to preserving and promoting the language.
“I consult with elders and cultural practitioners to maintain authenticity in my work. I also aim to make my stories engaging and relatable, blending traditional themes with contemporary issues to appeal to both younger and older readers,” he said.
Ndlovu hopes that his novels will contribute to a greater understanding and appreciation of Ndebele culture.
“My novels shed light on under-represented narratives, especially from the Ndebele community. By writing in isiNdebele, I am also contributing to the preservation and growth of the language, ensuring it has a voice in contemporary Zimbabwean literature,” he said.
When asked about the message he hopes readers take away from his writing, Ndlovu emphasised the importance of family unity and the dangers of allowing greed or unresolved pain to divide loved ones.
By day, Ndlovu is a dedicated secondary school teacher at Somvubu High School in Matabeleland North Province.
“Teaching IsiNdebele and Geography has been an incredible experience. It’s rewarding to see my students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of our rich cultural heritage.”
