From 10 kilometre to Half Marathon: Liquor Hub Fun Run takes a giant Leap

IN a major boost to athletics in the City of Kings, the Liquor Hub 10km Fun Run Charity Race is set to upgrade to a half marathon next year.

The event, which has become a staple on the athletics calendar, will also move to a new venue at Nkulumane Complex.

But before the upgrade, this yearโ€™s 10km fun run will take place on Sunday, with a lucrative prize pot up for grabs.

Liquor Hub Wholesale director Raj Modi made the announcement ahead of this weekendโ€™s event. โ€œWe have decided to upgrade the race to a half marathon in 2025,โ€ he said. โ€œAs a result, we will be holding the event at Nkulumane Complex. We are looking forward to a highly successful event.โ€

This yearโ€™s 10km fun run will offer prize money to the winners, with the menโ€™s and womenโ€™s champions each receiving R3,500. The top three finishers in the junior menโ€™s and womenโ€™s categories will receive R1,250, R800 and R600, respectively. The top two finishers in the male and female wheelchair sections will receive R1,500 and R1,000, respectively.

The event, which is a regular feature on the athletics calendar, draws some of the best athletes in the country. It is sponsored by Liquor Hub Wholesale Centre, with proceeds from the race benefitting the elderly in the City of Kings.

In recent years, Liquor Hub Wholesale proprietor and deputy minister of industry and commerce Raj Modi has used the event to support good causes, including buying air tickets for two children to undergo heart surgery in India and assisting with their treatment expenses.

This year, 100 families will receive grocery hampers worth $50 from Modi.

Madanyika also encouraged athletes to take part in the event. โ€œWe urge all athletes to come and participate in the event,โ€ he said. โ€œItโ€™s a great opportunity to test your skills and compete against some of the best athletes in the country.โ€

Registration for the event is pegged at $5 for seniors and $3 for juniors.
