Damage to buildings and materials during the rainy season can include issues such as water infiltration, structural weakening, and deterioration of building materials like wood, concrete, and metal.
Continuous exposure to moisture can lead to erosion, rotting, rusting, and even structural failure over time if not properly addressed. Additionally, heavy rainfall may exacerbate existing problems such as cracks or leaks, accelerating the degradation process.
Heavy rainfall can lead to the saturation of soil, which can cause landslides on slopes and hillsides. It can also cause flooding which can wash away roads, bridges and other infrastructure. Additionally, excess water can seep into the ground and cause damage to the foundation of buildings and other structures.
Since the onset of the rainy season, many people have been affected, with homes, churches, clinics, schools and even business premises damaged by the heavy rains. The road infrastructure has not been spared.
While businesses have been able to swiftly repair their buildings, some families have struggled to repair their homes, and have been exposed to the harsh weather conditions. It is time again where we call upon communities to come together and assist those who have been affected.
Communities play a crucial role in supporting fellow members, including the less privileged, fostering a sense of inclusion and social cohesion. There are several ways communities can assist those in need. It can be by providing basic needs and ensuring access to food, shelter, healthcare, and clothing, which is foundational. Community-led initiatives, food banks, and housing programmes can help address immediate needs.
Fostering inclusivity is also important. By building an environment where everyone feels valued and included, regardless of socioeconomic status, communities can nurture a sense of belonging and dignity.
Support networks cannot be undervalued. Organising peer networks, social programmes, and volunteer services creates bonds among community members and encourages mutual aid. These efforts not only uplift individuals but also strengthen the entire community.
The people of Bulawayo have always come in to offer a hand of support to the less privileged or those in need, and we urge communities in and outside the province to continue on the right path.
