The eight clubs in the inaugural Africa Super League set to start in August have been identified.

South Africa’s defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Guinea’s Horoya Athletic Club and TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will take part alongside Esperance (Tunisia), Ah Ahly (Egypt), Petro de Luanda (Angola), Wydad (Morocco) and Simba (Tanzania).

Last year Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe announced the launch of the CAF league, which will bring together the biggest clubs on the continent for an annual competition.

The new competition will reportedly see the prize money of up to $100m.
Winners and participants of the inaugural African Super League will receive significant prize money, while all 54 CAF Member Associations, including ZIFA, will receive substantial solidarity payments for football development.

“The CAF Executive Committee (EXCO) took a decision to launch the CAF Africa Super League in August 2022. This League will officially kick off in August 2023,” Motsepe said in a statement.

“We announced on 3 July 2022 that the total prize money of the CAF Africa Super League will be US$100 million, with the winner receiving USD 11.5 million,” he added.

The format is likely to see a single group of home and away fixtures during the course of the 2023/24 domestic season with suggestions the winner will earn a spot in the newly extended FIFA Club World Cup, with four spots available for Africa in 2025.
