A 39-YEAR-OLD man from Pumula South in Bulawayo has appeared in court facing charges of allegedly stealing copper cables.

Leonard Nyere appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate, Sibongile Marondedze, facing charges of contravening Section 60A (3) (a)(b) of the Electricity Act.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody to 10 January for continuation of trial.

Allegations levelled against the accused are that sometime in November 2024, in Pumula South suburb at around 10 am, he was seen walking around by residents carrying a Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) copper cable while on his way to his place of residence.

It was heard that the accused was apprehended by residents, who then proceeded to search him and found him carrying copper cables and a cable insulator.

The court further heard that the accused was taken to the police station where he was asked to produce a licence that allows him to possess any material belonging to the ZETDC and he was unable to do so, leading to his arrest.

The stolen property, weighing 1,5 kilogrammes, was recovered.
