THE CABS Candidates Chess Tournament is set to return for its third edition from 5 to 8 December at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) in Bulawayo.
Sponsored by CABS , the tournament not only provides a competitive platform for chess players but also represents a significant step towards decentralising chess events in Zimbabwe, taking them beyond the traditional venue of Harare.
Elvis Shora, the tournament organiser and vice-president of the Zimbabwe Chess Federation, expressed enthusiasm for the event.
“Registration is already underway, and we are thrilled to see such strong interest from players across the region. We are preparing for a fantastic turnout this year, and we remain committed to making this tournament a memorable experience for all participants.
“It’s not just about competition; it’s about building a vibrant chess community and providing our youth with positive opportunities that keep them engaged and away from crime and drug abuse,” said Shora.
The decision to host the tournament in Bulawayo for the third consecutive year underscores a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. This shift has several important implications.
“Firstly, it facilitates increased participation, as players from Bulawayo and the surrounding areas can now compete without the logistical challenges and costs associated with travelling to Harare. This change encourages greater involvement from local talent.
“Secondly, the tournament serves as a vital platform for local players to showcase their skills. Competing against established players, elevates their experience and expertise, helping them to grow in their chess journey. Lastly, the tournament features sections specifically designed for younger players, including the Under-16 Prestige and Under-16 Development sections,” read a statement from the Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF).
This year’s tournament will feature four distinct sections. The Open Section is open to all players and will test the skills of participants of all levels. The second category is the Ladies’ Section, which is dedicated to female chess players, aiming to enhance female representation in the sport.
The Under-16 Prestige Section is designed for talented young players, seeking to identify and nurture future champions. The Under-16 Development Section focuses on fostering skills among younger players, with an emphasis on learning and growth.
A major highlight for participants is the opportunity for the winners of both the Open Section and the Ladies Section to earn an invitation to the national championship. Additionally, the tournament boasts a total prize fund of US$5 083.
