Harare City Council has partnered with waste management firm Geo Pomona Waste Management to assist in the collection of refuse in the city.
Addressing the media today, Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe stated that the deal has gone through following a request made in August 2024, in which the city appealed for
Government intervention in solid waste management.
Minister Garwe said the Government initially handled waste management operations in Harare before resolving to involve private sector participation.
โTo this end, Geo Pomona Waste Management (Pvt) Ltd, a leading player in the waste management field, submitted an Expression of Interest to the Ministry and the City for refuse collection and waste management,โ he said.
Geo Pomona Waste Management’s chief executive officer and executive chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya said they are honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of collecting waste in Harare.
โAs Geo Pomona Waste Management, we are committed to putting our best foot forward to ensure that we deliver on this critical mandate. Our priority will be to clear illegal dumpsites across the city and restore Harareโs cleanliness,โ he stated.
Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume said the city wrote to the Local Government Ministry to request continued assistance regarding dumpsites, particularly during the rainy and festive seasons.
โWe want to ensure that as they manage the dumpsites, they also collect waste from households,โ he said.
